About York
York is one of England’s most historically rich and picturesque cities, famous for its unbroken ring of Medieval City Walls, its snaking medieval street known as The Shambles, and the towering Gothic masterpiece of York Minster. Originally founded by the Romans as Eboracum and later a significant Viking settlement known as Jorvik, the city’s deep history is celebrated through attractions like the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. The local housing stock is heavily influenced by this past, featuring a high number of Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses in areas just outside the city walls, many retaining attractive period features. The residential landscape also includes elegant Georgian and late-Victorian townhouses in prime locations, alongside more modern semi-detached homes and new-build flats and apartments, particularly in converted period properties or new developments on the city’s outskirts.
