About Coventry
Coventry is a historic English city known for its resilience and industrial past, having been a major center for cloth trading in the Middle Ages and later becoming the birthplace of the British motor and cycle industries. Though much of the medieval city center was destroyed in the Coventry Blitz of 1940, it famously rebuilt with a striking blend of old and new architecture, symbolized by the juxtaposed ruins of the old St. Michael’s Cathedral and the modernist design of the new Coventry Cathedral. The city’s residential landscape reflects this mix of ages and growth, featuring a variety of housing types like traditional detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses, alongside more modern flats and bungalows. The post-war rebuilding efforts and later suburban expansion mean many of its residential areas consist of 20th-century housing, with pockets of surviving medieval and post-medieval architecture like the old “top shops” of the ribbon-weaving era.
