Cornish Unit House Mortgage
Cornish Unit House Mortgage: There are around 700,000 non-standard construction homes across the UK. Many are perfect properties providing safe and comfortable living for many people and families. They are not defective homes, they are simply built from non-standard construction materials. The vast majority of homes in the UK are made from brick, with a tile or slate roof.
However there are plenty of homes built from other materials. You only need to watch an episode of ‘Grand Designs’ to see how some modern homes can be built from different materials.
What is a Cornish Unit House?
The Cornish Unit is a very recognisable non-standard construction home built with from PRC concrete cladding over a concrete frame. It has a Mansard style roof and tile cladding making it very unique. Around 30,000 of these homes were built as part of the post-war building effort. Many of these homes provide safe and comfortable homes for thousands of families across the UK. The majority of these properties were built just after the second world war to meet a housing shortage from 1946 to the late 1960’s.
Whilst these homes are no more likely to have issues than any normal home, the types of problems can be unique to that property type. For this reason, many high-street banks will not provide a mortgage on these types of homes. Thankfully First Select Mortgage Brokers has access to a range of specialist lenders who are regulated by the FCA who can provide mortgages on these homes. Just keep in mind they are likely to require a higher deposit compared to high-street lenders. The rates on these mortgages may also be higher, but we will bespoke a solution to ensure it is affordable for you and the monthly payments are within your budget. If you rent your home from the council or housing association, we can help with a Right to Buy Mortgage, and we can also help if your credit score is low and if you are self-employed.
